Walks in Mid Wales

A 30-minute drive from the hotel leads you to the vast expanses of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. This impressive mountain range includes the Black Mountains and South Wales’ highest mountain, Pen y Fan. 

Expect rugged landscapes, spectacular scenery, waterfalls, wild moorland and castles. The Brecons are designated dark sky sights, so if you’re partial to a bit of star-gazing, this is your place.

The iconic Sugar Loaf Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the Black Mountains, standing at 596 metres high. A haven for wildlife, head here to spot grouse, skylarks and red kites. 

Considered one of the most beautiful areas of mid Wales, and just 20 minutes from the hotel, the Abergwesyn Commons stretch for 12 miles between the Nant Irfon Valley and Llanwrthwl.  

The Irfon Valley cuts through Abergwesyn, offering spectacular views of the unspoilt, open countryside, and a steep climb up Cwm Gwesyn will reward you with breathtaking views, waterfalls and refreshing plunge pools.

A vast wilderness, incorporating steep-sided valleys and open countryside, Abergwesyn Commons offers some of the most tranquil and wild walks in Wales. 

Built to supply water to Cardiff and the south coast of Wales, the impressive Llyn Brianne Reservoir holds over 64 million cubic metres of water. A 30-minute drive from Lake Country House along the Abergwesyn pass, Llyn Brianne offers a range of incredible walking routes with fantastic views. 

A walk around the whole reservoir will take most of the day, although you can opt for shorter routes, taking in the local woodland and the beauty of the lake. The RSPB reserve is also a great place to explore.
